While microKORG features fewer voices (4 vs. 8), vocoder bands (8 vs. 16), and filters (1 vs. 2) than his younger brother the microKorg XL+, it stayed about 20 years in production even surpassing the latter model. While microKORG XL+ comprises a sound engine borrowed from Radias, microKORG is built on the MS2000’s tech ground.
The section with written info on the front panel seems to be a touching move from Korg – the design is definitely a forte of microKORG original version.
The 128 Programs are grouped into 8 categories including Trance, Techno/House, Electronica, DnB Breaks, HipHop/Vintage, Retro, SndFX/Hits, and Vocoder – only one program can be triggered at a time. 2 oscillators feature 71 waveforms including 7 standard analog ones and 64 DWGS (taken from DW-8000).
6-pattern arpeggiator, oscillator sync function, ring modulation, two MIDI-syncable LFOs, two ADSR envelopes are at your disposal. The vocoder, filter, programmable effects and equalizer allow for external audio processing. A slight dropout – microKORG lacks USB connectivity option.
Anyway this amazing unit was used by Prodigy, Royksopp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Nick Rhodes and the Pet Shop Boys.
