CS-80 was launched in 1976. The multitimbral instrument with analog subtractive synthesis features 8-voice polyphony as well as 2 oscillators per voice. Two synth layers are available per voice. Settings memory is based on a bank of micropotentiometers. LFO section features multiwaveform.

Storage memory offers 22 presets and 4 user patches. The effects section is represented with chorus and tremolo.

The 61-note velocity sensitive keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch which can be applied to individual voices. Among the control elements there are a ribbon controller for creating polyphonic pitchbends and glissandos. Yamaha CS-80 used to be one of the first powerful polyphonic synths and featured an impressive price tag.

The meaning of the instrument is significant for the music which is obvious from the list of the famous users. Vangelis is fond of the keyboard and used to take it for many recordings considering it an amazing instrument but requiring some performing practice. Back then the CS-80 keyboard quality and functioning deserved appraisal. Among notable users there are 10cc, Tony Banks from Genesis, Daft Punk, Brian Eno, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Royksopp, Ultravox, The Who and many others.
