Another masterpiece made by Dave Smith and John Bowen. The first synthesizer on the market featuring MIDI support.
Prophet-600 is an analog synthesizer with microprocessor control, has 6-voice polyphony. Each voice contains two voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) built on specialized Curtis CEM3340 integrated circuits. VCO produce a triangular, sawtooth and rectangular waveform with a different duty cycle. Voice generators are divided into two groups:
VCO1 of each voice is A.
VCO2 - B.
For groups "A" and "B" separate tuning, choice of the waveform and the depth of the pulse-width modulation (PWM) are available. For the "B" group, the "FINE" knob is also available, allowing you to adjust the VCO2 to an arbitrary interval in relation to VCO1, which makes it possible to get powerful bass tones and bright lead sounds. The sync mode (unison) of the oscillators is activated by the "SYNC" switch.
In the mixer section, the A and B group signals are mixed, with the possibility of balancing them.
The signal from the mixer goes to two CEM3372 chips involved in series. Each of these chips has a voltage controlled filter (VCF) and an amplifier (VCA) inserted. One filter allows you to achieve a slope of 12 dB per octave, and activation in series creates a low-pass filter with a slope of 24 dB. Cutoff, resonance and modulation depth adjustment is available. The source of the modulation can be a built-in low-frequency oscillator (LFO) and/or an ADSR envelope generator. The VCA also has its own independent ADSR envelope generator.
The built-in LFO produces a triangular or rectangular waveform that can be sent to modulate the filter section, as well as provide VCO with PW and FM modulation.
Prophet-600 includes a chord memory function, two one-track sequencers and an arpeggiator. The sequencer only operates in real time, in other words: the sequence is recorded manually and can not be edited later. The arpeggiator has three modes of operation: "up", "down" and cycle mode at which notes are played back according to the order of the pressed keys.
Prophet-600 was used by Wally Badarou, Tangerine Dream, Eat Static, The Fixer, HIA, Mark Jenkins, The Moog Cookbook, Level 42, Mentallo, Mondo Cain, Oznic Tentacles.
