Prophet VS is the first synthesizer which applies vector synthesis method. Unfortunately, Prophet VS was produced only a few months before Sequential Circuits ceased its operating in 1987. Later (in 1990), this method was used by Dave Smith in Korg Wavestation, which, in fact, is a modified version of Prophet VS.

The sound is created by mixing simultaneously the signal of four oscillators. For mixing 127 waveforms are available, 32 of which can be customized. The proportion of signals is set by the position of the joystick, and can also be modulated by the signal of the built-in LFO.

The synthesizer has an analog filter section controlled by a microprocessor. The filter has a four-stage structure with resonance, cutoff frequency and modulation depth (LFO or an independent envelope generator) control.

Prophet VS comprises a stereo chorus effect and an arpeggiator. All the settings of the synthesizer can be saved in one of 100 presets.
The synthesizer was used by Apollo 440, Depeche Mode, Trent Reznor, Vince Clarke, Kraftwerk, John Carpenter.
