The Roland JX3P, introduced in the 1983, was an analog synthesizer, the first from Roland to be equipped with MIDI.

Sound capabilities:

  • 2 DCOs (Digitally Controlled Oscillators) per voice
  • 12 DCOs allowing dual oscillator and 6-note polyphony
  • VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter) with high-pass and low-pass options
  • VCA, LFO, ADSR envelope

Key features included:

  • 32 preset tones and 32 user-programmable locations
  • Built-in sequencer and chorus effect
  • Basic MIDI implementation (JX-3P was one of the very first synthesizers to support MIDI)
  • Optional PG200 programmer

Design:

  • 61-key, 5-octave synth-action keyboard in a compact enclosure with pitch lever moved from the left to the top
  • Simplified control surface with LED-equipped buttons
  • Pitch bender and LFO trigger on the left
  • Four bank select buttons and 16 tone selection pads

Notable features:

  • Mute function for emphasizing right-hand melody
  • Key Transpose for easy key changes
  • Capable of creating atmospheric pads and danceable sounds

Despite its limitations compared to modern synthesizers, the JX-3P remains popular for its unique sound capabilities and distinct tone.
