The Oberheim OB-X8 is a powerful analog polyphonic synthesizer that combines the best features of its predecessors - the OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 - into a single instrument. This 8-voice synthesizer boasts a pure analog signal path, delivering the warm, punchy Oberheim sound that has been featured in countless iconic recordings.
At its core, the OB-X8 features two discrete SEM/OB-X-lineage VCOs per voice, providing the classic Oberheim tone. The synthesizer offers saw, square/pulse, triangle, and noise waveforms. It includes both discrete SEM-lineage VCFs for authentic OB-X-style tone and genuine Curtis filters for the bold character of the OB-Xa and OB-8. The envelope responses are meticulously modeled to match each OB model.
The OB-X8 comes in two versions: a keyboard model with a 61-key FATAR velocity- and touch-sensitive keyboard, and a desktop model for space-saving setups. Both versions include a full-featured arpeggiator, bi-timbral capability for splits and doubles, and over 400 factory programs, including the full set of sounds from the OB-X, OB-SX, OB-Xa, and OB-8.
With the release of OS version 2.0, the OB-X8 has gained even more powerful features:
- Binaural mode that pans individual voices hard left and right for true stereo operation.
- Simultaneously selectable waveshapes for each oscillator, extending timbral variety.
A new 4-pole low pass filter type with fuller bass at high resonance. - Independent VCO 1 and 2 level LFO modulation destinations.
- Expanded arpeggiator clock sync options with selectable note division values.
- Support for MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) for nuanced control over individual notes.
- Poly chain capability, allowing for up to 32-voice setups with multiple instruments.
The OB-X8 also offers extensive connectivity options, including stereo and mono outputs, various control inputs, MIDI connections, and USB. With its combination of classic analog sound, modern features, and expressive capabilities, the Oberheim OB-X8 stands as a versatile and powerful tool for both studio production and live performance.
