The Korg Z1 is the world's first multi-model, multitimbral physical modelling synth, combining great strengths with some weaknesses. It features:
12-voice polyphony (expandable to 18)
6-part multitimbral
high quality semi-weighted 61-note keyboard with aftertouch and velocity sensitivity (Yamaha FS)
240x64 pixel LCD display
23 knobs for real-time control
X-Y touch pad
All-metal enclosure with plastic sides
Oscillator Models
The Z1 offers 13 oscillator models, including:
Standard Analogue
VPM (FM synthesis)
Brass and Reed
Plucked and Bowed String
Comb Filter and Resonance
Ring Modulator, Sync, and Cross-Modulation
Organ and Electric Piano
Each model provides extensive parameters for detailed sound shaping.
Sound Architecture
Four sound sources per Program: two MOSS oscillators, sub-oscillator, and noise generator
Two multi-mode filters
Five envelopes and four LFOs
Extensive modulation options
Effects and Outputs
Two Insert Effects, Master Effects (reverb and delay), and Master EQ. Limited to stereo output, which may be restrictive for multitimbral use
Editing and Control
Two-tiered editing system: real-time controllers and in-depth programming interface
Performance Editor knobs for quick parameter adjustments
Software editor included for more detailed programming
Pros
Excellent sound quality, particularly for electric pianos and Clavinet emulations
Versatile and deep synthesis capabilities
Intuitive editing interface
Cons
Limited polyphony (without expansion)
Single stereo output
Non-multitimbral effects in MultiSet mode
Slow Program/Multi changes
Despite some limitations, the Z1 offers unique and high-quality sounds, making it a compelling instrument for musicians and synthesizer enthusiasts even today.
One of the first analogue modeling synthesizers built on the basis of OASYS project developments. As a result it grew into a polyphonic Z1 although it can perfectly be used as a solo synthesizer for leading parts.
