In 2014 a digital sample-sequencer - Korg volca sample was released. The development of the instrument was inspired by the first wave of ever created samplers. The housing is rendered in white, red and gray colors cheekily hinting at the classic MPC. It is worth noting that the sampler shares many key features with its predecessors. It is placed in the same plastic housing with a metal top, it has a 16-step sequencer and a LED.
In the upper right part there’s a standard audio output for headphones with a 3.5 mini jack. Next to it there are midi input and sync in/out ports which allow synchronization with other volcas or other compatible devices. It should be noted that the sample is strikingly different from the rest of the series units as it has a number of notable features. It is predominantly a digital instrument, and among its features a new addition stands out - Analogue Isolator Circuit which is able to increase or cut the low-frequency component as well as increase the high frequencies of the output signal. As a digital sampler, it sports the functions unfolding in more extensive sequencer possibilities. The small box incorporates a powerful step sequencer with the addition of Song Mode, which provides users with the ability to save and return lost arrangements up to 16 steps. Among other things, the interface can detect panning and swing knobs.
In terms of basic technical specification, it is a 10-part PCM sampler with a 16 step sequencer. Each of the 10 sample slots has 11 parameters which change the start, length and speed of the sample playback. They are also responsible for adjusting the sound level and panning. All active parameters are recorded and played using the Motion Sequencer.
A miniature sampler with great potential has reverse and reverb effects with a wet/dry mix adjustment. The digital reverb has a few limited features, but obviously does not fail in its stunning processing. The built-in memory allows to store up to 100 samples with a maximum volume of 4 MB, 65 seconds. The instrument can achieve an interesting lo-fi sound due to a combination of a sampling rate of 31.25 kHz/16 bit and an Analogue Isolator. This combination makes the original signal kind of crispy. Putting all together, we have quite an outstanding mini sample sequencer making rhythms and loops as fast as you need them.
