DX11 is an 8-voice polyphonic synthesizer of the famous Yamaha DX series. The 61-note velocity sensitive keyboard with aftertouch is based on the 4-operator digital FM synthesis. There’s no filter section onboard.
The effects section is represented with reverb, DDL delay, pan and tremolo. Memory provides with 128 preset patches, 32 performance patches, External cartridge memory stores 64 patches.
Released in 1988 DX11 appeared on the market 4 years after DX7 did. The instrument carries same concept of the DX series featuring FM synthesis as its core. There was the only significant difference – the unit was given 8-part multitimbrality and as we know all other DX instruments were monotimbral.
The multitimbrality allows for assigning multiple keyboard zones having various patches active simultaneously. This feature allowes for complex performances whether they’re live or recorded (you can use external sequencers, there were neither sequencer nor arpeggiator onboard). The programming process got a bit easier thanks to the Quick Edit functions – you can edit tones, envelope attack and release amount.
DX11 offers 8 voices of polyphony (DX21, DX100 and TX81Z – rack module which actually seems to be the keyboardless versionof the
DX11 – also feature only 8 voices) while DX7 has 16-note polyphony but DX11 generates up to 8 different waveforms comparing to other DX synths giving only sine wave.
The instrument was used by Astral Projection and Autechre.
