Like all the devices of Roland Boutique series (JP-08, JX-03, JU-06), VP-03 vocoder uses ACB (Advanced Circuit Behavior) technology to recreate the waveform generation processes in an analog synthesizer to ultimately achieve sound waves approximate in their parameters to the same principles of analog sound of the early 80's as much as possible (for reproduction they served as models). As for VP-03 - it was a popular 35 years ago vocoder featuring keyboard - VP-330. By the way, the keyboard can be provided for a compact VP-03: the unit can get integrated with K-25m (2 mini-key octaves) compatible with all Roland Boutique devices, or connected to any MIDI controller.
VP-03 has a vocoder onboard, a voice emulator, and also the sounds of string instruments - everything sounds the way its famous ancestor did, and other instruments of the series copy their grandfathers quite successfully.
Besides, Roland Corporation provides new features, such as a step sequencer, 16 note memory units and 2 mini ribbon controllers, which replace the pitch bend and modulation wheels. In addition, this capable baby has a built-in speaker, an XLR socket for a gooseneck microphone and can be powered by batteries or vamp your computer's USB. All this is packed in a high-quality and solid metal housing and is offered for $350.
