After Remote 25 MIDI controller was released, in 2004 Novation launched X-Station 25. The instrument is very similar to Remote 25 and shares a lot with it, particularly knobs, sliders and keys. It also has the same silvery-gray matte color. However, X-Station is not a copy of Remote 25. The set of features of the controller is very different, and X-Station has a built-in synth. The 2-octave keyboard is semi-weighted, and in the middle there is a blue LCD with backlight.
You can connect the device to the computer via USB which is responsible for both MIDI data and audio. There are also 2 standard MIDI in/out, so you can use X-Station as MIDI interface. In general, each connection brings versatility: an additional power connector, the mentioned MIDI connectors, digital, as well as analog outputs, and finally connectors for the expression pedal, and the audio interface.
Novation X-Station offers an extensive control: 9 sliders, lots of knobs, rotary encoders and buttons. While Remote 25 groups its control elements into types within 3 rows, X-Station has a slightly different approach, by locating all the elements together, which can correspond to the module panels of the software synthesizers. Thus, there is a group of knobs and buttons laid out as a section of the oscillator/mixer, filter section, LFO, arpeggiator and effects. The sliders are sorted as 2 modules of ADSR envelope generators. Besides, 8 knobs along the top of the synthesizer can be assigned to pan the mixer template controls.
The central section has standard transport controls and an LED display. The left part of the panel is dedicated to the audio interface. The keyboard is identical to the keyboard installed in Remote 25, with aftertouch and velocity sensitive keys, a pitch/mod joystick, and the XY touchpad.
