In 2000 Korg Electribes series got a new member - a sampler called Korg ElecTribe S (ES-1). It gained its popularity not only due to the usual playback of recorded drums, but also thanks to high-quality, aggressive processing effects.
The main library of sounds features 64 patterns and 86 samples which are used in a variety of genres, from hip-hop to drum-n-bass. Moreover, there is the possibility of adding custom samples. While interacting with the pitch, filter, or effects you can change any loaded samples. Among all the functionality there is one very useful function called Time Slice with the tempo adjustment. It finds the attack phase of the loop, and cuts it into separate parts for convenient use of percussion.
The upper right part of the panel is equipped with 2 effects processors: a master delay, and a selection of 1 of 11 effects. Types of “treatments” vary from the natural intervention of reverb and chorus to more rare effects like a decimator and a resonant filter. There is also a modulatable delay introducing its iridescent intricacies. As with the previous instruments of the ElecTribes line, a Motion Seq button was added to the sampler’s layout which tracks each change of any effects and filters including Time slice elements.
ElecTribe S allows up to 9 sample loops and drums to be used as blocks located in the Part section. Frankly, it is here that some of the secrets of sampling are revealed. The added loop is divided into 16 steps of the sequencer, and can be changed thanks to the Roll or Reverse buttons.
SmartMedia is responsible for storing samples, patterns and songs, but this will require 3V SmartMedia card from 4 to 64 mb. This function allows you to download AIFF or WAV files from your computer. The instrument was applied by Nine Inch Nails, The Crystal Method, A Guy Called Gerald, Mouse On Mars, Dead Silence, Praxis, The Prodigy, Crystal Distortion, Freddy Fresh, and the Chemical Brothers.
