Released in 2003 the unprecedented leader of its series - Korg ElecTribe MX (EMX-1) made a huge step ahead in terms of improved interface and the quality of the output sound. The instrument is made of a reliable metal housing which is equipped with a small LCD supporting backlight. A non-trivial synthesizer stands out with its new technology called "Valve Force". The eye-catching pair of vacuum tubes, centered on top, allow the mix to be "warm and tube-like". The characteristic color can be added with the Tube Gain knob.

Let's start with the most important: its sound core is based on MMT (Multi Modeling Technology) which has 16 different oscillator algorithms. The analog instrument enables additive synthesis, PCM, dual osc, wave shaping, unison, formant models, ring mod, cross mod, etc. External audio signals can be manipulated using a combined filter and subsequently processed with an internal filter or effects. Its built-in PCM library consists of 207 drums (from aggressive kicks to light snares) and 76 classic, organic timbres.

ElecTribe MX has extended memory, increased number of voices, multitimbrality, as well as additional real-time controllers. The equipment sports multi-timbrality up to 9 percussion sounds, 5 synth parts with the function of the dynamic component accent (with a maximum size of 16 parts). Each part has extensive EG Modulation capabilities and a low frequency (LFO) oscillator.
Among other things, the "blue box" included a colossal collection of effects: reverb, delay, flanger/chorus, modulator, a grain shifter, a decimator, and many others. A number of new filters are also available: Low Pass, High Pass, Band Pass and even Band Pass Plus.

As for the sequencer capabilities, it allows the use of up to 256 patterns that are stored in the internal memory. In the general settings, there is a combination of patterns as well as mute data. All information is quickly saved and loaded via SmartMedia cards. Recording in real time is conveniently edited via the timing, pitch, length settings. Meanwhile, the step sequencer records continuously pressed buttons, and plays them back as part of the pattern.
