After more than forty years Buchla engineers brought their legendary synthesizer back on the market. The modern model doesn’t differ much from the vintage one. In fact it is the same Music Easel but expanded with modern functionality.
The synthesizer is based on the main oscillator and modulatable one.
The main oscillator has a five-octave range. The waveform is controlled by the "timbre" section and can take the shape of a saw, square, triangle and intermediate complex shapes.
For the modulatable oscillator only sawtooth, triangular and square waveforms are available. This oscillator has further modes available:
HI - allows the oscillator to be used in VCO mode (voltage controlled oscillator).
LOW - LFO (low frequency oscillator) mode.
The switch selects the mode of interaction between the modulatable oscillator and the main one. You can apply ring modulation, amplitude or frequency modulation. The depth of modulation is adjusted by the faders, and can also control external CV signals.
The generated signal enters the "dual lopass gate" block which is functionally very similar to Buchla 292h module. The function block can operate in VCF (voltage controlled low pass filter) mode, VCA (voltage controlled amplifier) or combine both modes.
The synthesizer has a real analog echo effect built on the spring tank. It is located in front of the output block and has an effect depth adjustment.
The synthesizer has basic MIDI commands (Note On/Off) support and the ability to synchronize the built-in arpeggiator with MIDI Clock.
There is also an archaic way of storing the sound presets on special cards (settings are set by jumpers and resistors).
Users note that when playing chromatic passages the tracking of notes might seem not so perfect.
For power supply an external 12V source is used, and battery power is also enabled (included in the delivery kit). When using the battery, the synthesizer is able to work autonomously for up to three hours.
