This 5-octave model with a semi-weighted keyboard manufactured by Fatar (though only with monophonic aftertouch) is based on the famous Virus TI2 module. The synthesizer includes a few sources of generation from simple waves to 64 wavetables, including granular and formant synthesis. The powerful hypersaw mode gives an impressive unison effect.
The digital section offers 3 oscillators and one sub for each of at least 80 voices (depending on the use), frequency modulation, synchronization and noise generator. The main difference compared to the previous version (TI) is that, in addition to its standard virtual oscillators, TI2 allows the use of wavetables – whether you’d like to apply them separately or by mixing both of the wave sources.
Rampant nature of Virus is largely exlained by its filters: here you can find both multi-mode and DSP emulation of analog 6/12/24Db ones. Increasing the resonance in the self-oscillation zone, one can hear the intrinsic to TI squeak. Emulations are quite unique in their own way – they were devised unique in order to avoid criticism and constant comparison to the original ones. Besides, two filters can be used independently from each other.
3 LFOs with a wide choice of as many as 68 waveforms perform their functions perfectly, and the two-vector modulation matrix is quite suitable for real time experiments and has 6 slots (1 source and 3 assignments for each slot), and to imagine the number of manipulations that It allows is possible only with the help of the editor and the screen. However, this doesn’t become a significant problem for live performance, since the main parameters are monitored on the control panel, and access to more detailed settings are in 1-4 steps of the menu.
The effects are represented by a delay (with variations of the modulatable tape delay), a reverb, an equalizer, a distortion, a phaser, a chorus, and a unison. The variety of techniques Virus TI demonstrates with its long evolving and almost non-repeating pads. Compared to TI, TI2 got a fresh version of the firmware and new effects - Frequency Shifter, mentioned above Tape Delay, the new Distortion and Character. In total, up to 129 effects can be layered on the audio stream.
The developers of the synthesizer paid special attention to the correct timing of samples, as well as the opportunities for high-quality synchronization with external sequencers, compensation for delays in data transmission. Besides, Virus TI2 has excellent integration capabilities with DAW, including DAW remote control. Virus peculiar feature is in its built-in 24-bit/192kHz audio interface, digital inputs and outputs, in addition to 6 balanced analog outputs. The synthesizer has 2 GB of memory for rewritable patches, in addition to 512 MB factory preset patches.
The quality inherent in the sound of Virus brings it together with many genres of dance music, for which, in the first place, it was actually created.
