ElecTribe SX (ESX-1) appeared in 2003 together with Electribe EMX-1. One can surely state that ESX-1 model is one of the best samplers.
Working with samples in ElecTribe SX is quite similar to the synthesis process in EMX-1, but the sound sources are dominated by samples rather than waveforms. The sampler includes 9 adjustable buttons (primarily used for percussion), 2 keyboard buttons for playing melodies, 2 stretch buttons responsible for the time stretch and slice part, which allows you to split a single sample into several steps.
The red sampler (like its "blue counterpart") has a built-in sequencer that allows you to link patterns and loops together. Patterns can be played and recorded for each part, or added directly via the panel with 16 buttons located in the lower block. The majority of sequencer options are intuitive and comprehensible, while the parameters of sampling and synthesis require getting used to.
It's hard not to pay attention to a unique arpeggiator with a slider and ribbon controller, which together provide control of note length and pitch. It is very intuitive to use, in addition, all manipulations can affect the patterns and be saved for subsequent automatic playback. These features go hand in hand with the so-called step sequencing function which is predominantly responsible for recording the knobs motion and changing the parameters. EMX-1 and ESX-1 are not devoid of identical properties in the effects section. Their selection ranges from amazing reverb and compressor to bitcrushing and pitch-shifting.
Among all the settings, the greatest attention should be paid to 2 vacuum tubes placed on the top in the center. When tweaking the "Tube Gain" knob, the signal begins to pass through a pair of 12AX7 tubes, which will add that warmth and analog “dirt”.
It is also worth noting that the only significant update for the 2010 models is the transition from SmartMedia to SD cards slots for storing information. The replacement of outdated format proved to be a very big plus, as soon as SD-cards are cheaper and widely available in application. Moreover, Electribes allow you to use cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB.
