Acidlab is a German module manufacturer which makes devices paying tribute to Roland cult instruments. Among such tribute-synths there are: Detroit, an analog drum machine based on TR-909 circuitry with some sound parameters added; Drumatrix, an analog drum machine based on TR-606 with additional sounds and parameters; M303 module, a module with TB-303 voice comprising VCO, VCF, VCA and envelope generator (analog circuitry replicates the original one) and Miami, an analog drum computer based on TR-808 circuitry.
It’s worth noting that Miami happened to be truly successful – comparing it to Roland machine we should say that the difference is no bigger than that between two vintage 808 units. Plus Miami sports undeniable advantages – new modern components as well as pattern editing with the ability of quick switch back to performance mode. Even when TR8 came out Roland didn’t turn Miami useless: Acidlab’s drum machine offers the whole set of individual outputs, sufficient pattern memory and includes DIN Sync I/O which will come in handy while using other Acidlab devices or the retro Roland one.
