Juno-60 followed Juno-6 featuring a 61-note keyboard that same year (1982). The monotimbral instrument offers a 6-voice polyphony and one digitally controlled oscillator per voice. The oscillator generates pulse, saw and square. The main spec which helped Roland to compete with Korg Polysix and which Juno-6 didn’t provide was patch memory installed in Juno-60. The synthesizer has no MIDI implementation and offers proprietory DCB instead making external control available via it (Juno-6 supported DCB as well). MIDI would be supported by Juno-106.
DCOs were advantageous components back then as soon as VCOs required tuning. The analog filter section comprised non resonant high pass filter and 4-pole resonant low pass one capable of self-oscillating. Memory provided storage for 56 patches. There’s an LFO for modulation possibilities. You can create some pitch vibrato, PWM or achieve a tremolo effect simultaneously and adjusting the amount of each. There’s an arpeggiator, stereo chorus effect integrated onboard as well as the possibility to control Juno-60 with external sequencers.
The instrument was used by Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Eurythmics, Tame Impala, Ultravox, Yazoo and many others.
