Serge Tcherepnin is an American engineer and designer who created the Serge Modular Synthesizer — one of the most influential alternative modular systems alongside Moog and Buchla, known for its patch-programmable "paper face" panels and musically intuitive architecture.

Tcherepnin developed the Serge system at CalArts in 1972–74, working with students and composers to create a modular instrument that emphasized function over form and offered unique modules like the Universal Slope Generator and Smooth & Stepped Generator.

The Serge philosophy — banana jacks, dual-unipolar power, and panels organized by signal flow — influenced a generation of modular designers. After decades of DIY and small-batch production, Serge systems experienced a revival through Random*Source and other licensees, bringing Tcherepnin's designs to the Eurorack era.
