The frequency shifter and balanced modulator are two independent functional units integrated in the Buchla 285e housing.

Frequency Shifter is designed to shift the input signal to an arbitrary frequency. The offset frequency can be set from the internal oscillator or fed through a separate input. The built-in oscillator has a frequency from 1 to 1000 Hz. FM modulation is also provided. The shifter has two independent outputs: with a raised frequency (UP) and a lowered (DOWN).

Balanced modulator is intended for multiplication of signals (to achieve the ring modulation effect). For modulation, both the built-in oscillator and the signal fed to the input "ref" can be used. The internal generator produces a sine wave in the range from 1 to 1000 Hz.

There is also an input for FM modulation.
